Welcome to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) section. STEM education is about critical thinking and problem-solving; through developing these essential skills, teachers at Claremont aspire to prepare young people from different socio-economic backgrounds, to expand their minds to become inventors, scientists, researchers, and future change makers. Here you can find out about the opportunities that Claremont students have to prepare them for careers in these essential areas.
Outstanding STEM Results
It has been another outstanding year for STEM education at Claremont. We are delighted with a fantastic set of GCSE and A-Level results. Here are some highlights:
- GCSE Combined Science
- 74.6% of students achieved grades 4/4 or above (54.6% nationally)
- 19.7% of students achieved grades 7/7 or above (7.7% nationally)
- 6.3% of students achieved grades 8/8 or above (3.5% nationally)- this has beaten last year's results, setting a new record!
- GCSE Separate Science
- A-Level Chemistry
- 44% of students achieved A* - B
- 19.5% of students achieved A* - A.
- BTEC Level 3: Applied Science
- 70.6% of students achieved a Distinction Distinction (DD) or above! ( 12/17 students!)
- 47% of Students received Distinction* Distinction (D*D) or above ( 8/17 students)
- 2 Students broke course records by being the first to achieve a Distinction* Distinction* (D*D*) on the course (11.8%).
- A-Level Mathematics
- 78% of pupils achieved A* - C in Maths
- 100% of students achieved A*- E in Further Maths
- 75% of students achieved a remarkable A* - B!
STEM Teachers at Claremont
Our team of STEM teachers are brilliant at promoting STEM education in our school. They have studied a diverse range of subjects at some of the top universities across the globe! These include but are not limited to: Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Sociobiology, Medicine, Agricultural Zoology, Medical Diagnostics, Aeronautical Engineering, Microbiology and Computational Biophysics. We are proud of our specialist STEM teachers who are highly qualified - examiners for different examination boards, speakers for the Royal Institution, members of the Royal Society, Masters and PhDs, as well as a Chartered Chemist and even an actual medical doctor! Their subject knowledge and specialism is allowing for advanced and in-depth learning to take place.

STEM Education at Claremont
We have 14 modern science laboratories, computer suites, classrooms equipped with iPads, data-loggers, 3D printers, telescopes, high-quality touch screens and graphical calculators.
Over 130 students each year do triple science and we get amazing results at GCSE in Maths and Sciences. STEM is just as popular at A-levels! Out of 125 applications sent to UCAS this year, 64 were for STEM subjects, which is over 50%! Student's choices included not just traditional Natural Sciences and Medicine, but also more exotic STEM courses, such as Neuroscience and Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science. A large number of applicants from Claremont are considering studying Chemical and Mechanical Engineering at the university, as well as Product Design and Aerospace Engineering. To spur our Keys Stage 5 student's curiosity for STEM subjects even further, we are excited about the new Level 3 (A level / AS level / BTEC) qualifications we have offered this year, including but not limited to, the brand new Extended Projects Qualifications (EPQ) and Cambridge Technical Level 3 qualification in Health & Social Care.
Amazing Enrichment Activities
STEM learning goes beyond the classroom setting. Recent trips include but are not limited to:
- Year 7 and 8 students' trip to Salters’ Festivals of Chemistry
- Year 7 students trip to the Science Museum
- Year 9 students attending the Royal Institution Master classes
- Year 10 and 11 students' visit to Oxford University
- Trips to UCL with year 10 and 11 students attending lectures on Fridays
- Year 13 students' trip to Middlesex University for a Gel Electrophoresis laboratory
- Trip to CERN in Geneva, Switzerland with year 12 and year 13 students.
Claremont prides itself on providing excellent preparation for students entered for STEM Olympiads and challenges. This year we offered a selected number of our most gifted students the opportunity to take part in the following:
- Year 10 triple Scientists competed in the Royal Society of Biology Challenge
- 12 students from years 12 and 13 were entered for UKMT Maths challenge -
- - Five of them received bronze and two silver certificates.
- Five of our year 12 and 13 students completed the Chemistry Olympiad Competition -
- - Two received bronze and one silver certificates.
In addition, extra curricula opportunities include: Year 7 Robotics Club, Science Clubs for different year groups, CREST Award Scheme, Year 12 Engineering and the Royal Society STEM Clubs, and a chess club for all staff and students.
STEM Highlights 2019
Year 9 students took part in the 16th Annual Science Conference at the University of Westminster and emerged as winners of the competition with their project on “an impact of Sleep Deprivation on Student’s Concentration Levels”.
Year 12 and 13 students presented their STEM projects at a prestigious International Science Conference in Tonbridge, Kent. Claremont was the only non-selective state school represented among well-known independent schools from across the UK, as well as schools from Germany and Japan.
Inspiring Woman into STEM related careers event at Bank of Switzerland (UBS) attended by ambitious Claremont girls.
Year 10 Biology students recently took part in the Royal Society of Biology Challenge, a national competition that involved a set of challenging online tests. Five students gained awards and commendations including one gold and one silver awards.
The new Product Design A-Level has further strengthen this popular area of STEM. This year’s cohort designed fashionable key holders to deepen their knowledge of the enterprise side of product design.
Selected number of year 9 students participated in the ‘Stop Motion’ Science competition, run by the Linnean Society. Four groups in total from Claremont were shortlisted for the final the national final, from thousands of entries nationally.
20 Sixth Form Science students went to Geneva, Switzerland. The trip included a visit in CERN (Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL - research institute in Lausanne where our students visited Swiss Plasma Centre) and Cailler Chocolate factory in Gruyere.
20 students from years 10 to 13, went to a NewScientist Live Festival - an award-winning, mind-blowing festival of ideas and discoveries for everyone curious about science.
- Arron Deacy completed his PhD in Chemistry at Oxford University
- Anshul Verma completed his PhD in Mathematics at Kings College London
- Gina Solanki completed her training in UCL School of Medicine
- Miet Takodara completed his degree in Actuarial Science at LSE.
